The Appledore Bell

Appledore, Devon (installed 27 May, 2009); this estuary has some of the highest tides in Europe. Here they built ships, fish and traded to the Americas and to Russia. It is an important and historic port.
In thrall to the moon
rocked by her ebb and flow
I sing of swells beneath the stars
black waves at the storms height
new ships’ rhythmic passage west
seabirds in the dancing wake
all who set sail in sorrow or joy
and all who sleep below .
Each Bell has its own inscription.  This was chosen by the community for the Appledore Bell
